Appendix B - MS Word Styles

The following table lists MS Word styles, their descriptions, what type of style they are, their uses, and with which DBT style they correspond. The “Description” column lists default settings — that is, how Word defines the style when it is first installed. Your settings may be different if you or someone else has changed them.

The “Description” column defines exactly how a style affects paragraph and/or character formatting, such as indenting and font size, as listed in MS Word.

Under the “¶/a” column, “¶” means paragraph style — the style affects an entire paragraph, including character formatting. “a” means character style — the style affects only character formatting. Character styles may be applied to part of a paragraph to override the default character formatting.

The “Use” column explains a style’s intended use, as interpreted by the author of this guide.

The “DBT Style” column lists the DBT style that corresponds to the Word style. If the column says “Ignored,” then text with that style applied in Word may not import to DBT. If the “DBT Style” column says “None,” then it will probably import without a style applied.

For more information on using Microsoft Word Styles, see “Formatting: Formatting with Styles” in the Microsoft Word Help table of contents.
